Baseball Falls to Temple in Home Opener

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island baseball team was defeated by Temple, 10-6, in the Atlantic 10 opener for both teams, Friday afternoon at Bill Beck Field. The two squads rallied through over three hours of ball with temperatures in the high 30s and winds gusting over 30 mph.

Trailing 4-0 after two innings, Rhody got its first run on a third-inning triple by senior Mike O'Malley (Nashua, N.H.) that scored sophomore Zoey Angulo (Miami, Fla.).

Stan Orzechowski crossed the plate for Temple in the top on the fourth to make the score 5-1 before URI closed the gap with a two-run fifth inning and RBIs by both O'Malley and senior Zach Zaneski (Waterford, Conn.).

The Owls (8-7) used three unearned runs to extend their lead to 8-3 in the top of the sixth before sophomore Rob Deveney (Marlton, N.J.) used a sac fly to plate O'Malley in the bottom of the eighth.

Both teams scored twice in ninth inning, ending the game with Temple on top, 10-6

Rhode Island (6-10) committed a season-high nine errors, resulting in five unearned runs. Temple finished with three errors while both teams recorded eight hits.

Senior Brett Palanski (Nashua, N.H.) was charged with the loss, giving up three hits and three earned runs with three strikeouts and three walks in five full innings. Temple's Tom Dolan earned the win, lasting six innings while giving up six hits and three runs.

The two teams return to Bill Beck Field, tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
