April 15, 2008

Box Score

HAMDEN, Conn. - Senior Zach Zaneski (Waterford, Conn.) and junior Shaun Hagey (Ephrata, Pa.) each went 2-for-4 with two runs as the Rhode Island baseball team posted a 6-1 win at Quinnipiac, Tuesday afternoon. Senior designated hitter Chris Parkinson (Utica, N.Y.) also had two hits on the day, including solo homerun in the fifth inning.

The win improves Rhody's record to 16-19 and extends the Rams' winning streak to five games.

Sophomore Dan Rossignol (Nashua, N.H.) was credited the win, tossing six-and-a-third scoreless innings while senior Jamie Degidio (Narragansett, R.I.) threw 1.2 innings of no-hit relief before freshman Gardner Leaver (Montauk, N.Y.) came out to finish the game in the bottom of the ninth.

URI opened the scoring in the top of the fourth when Hagey doubled to the gap in right center field and moved to third on a dribbler out in front of the plate. Senior Mike O'Malley (Nashua, N.H.) then slugged a double to the left center fence, plating Hagey and giving the Rams a 1-0 lead.

The following inning, Parkinson - who had not seen action since March 22 - sent the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for the 2-0 lead on just his second hit of the season.

The Rams scored two more in their next at-bat as Hagey singled and then stole second before advancing to third on a throw that ended up in left center field. Zaneski then drove in Hagey with a double to deep right before moving to third on a sac-bunt by senior Mike O'Malley (Nashua, N.H.). Sophomore Rob Deveney (Marlton, N.J.) went on to plate Zaneski with his ninth double of the season.

The Rams tacked on two more in the top of the eighth on a two-out two-run single to center by junior Dan Rhault (Lincoln, R.I.).

Quinnipiac's lone run came in the bottom of the ninth when Jeff Carino plated Michael Amanti on a deep fly ball to left field.

The Rams are back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they host Hartford at 3:30 p.m.
