KINGSTON, R.I. - Sophomore Darci Borden (Elma, Wash.) drove in four runs in the University of Rhode Island's 7-5 loss in nine innings to Dayton Friday afternoon in non-conference softball action at the URI Softball field.
Trailing 5-0 after 4.5 innings, Borden laced a two-out double in the fifth that scored sophomore Jackie Kampmeier (East Norriton, Pa.) and seniors Christine Gentile (West Babylon, N.Y.) and Danielle Quimby (Lake Forest, Calif.) to close the gap to 5-3. In the ninth, Borden plated sophomore MaryBeth Ball (Clinton, Mass.) with a single and senior Shelly Peterson (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) tied the game with a single that scored Kampmeier.
In the ninth, the Flyers (19-21, 6-7 A-10) pushed across two runs on a fielders choice by Emily Stegman. With the bases loaded, Stegman hit a grounder to Quimby at second base, who opted for the force out at second. Laura Matthews - the runner on third - scored on the play, and Anne Maci scored from second after Borden's throw to first base went past sophomore first baseman Leah DiBussolo (East Norriton, Pa.).
Senior Jill Anderson (Cohoes, N.Y.) started for the Rams and allowed five hits and four runs (two earned) in two innings of work before being replaced by freshman Stacey Stanovich (Northbridge, Mass.) in the third. Stanovich worked the final seven innings and allowed seven hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out six. Eva Rappe worked two perfect innings to earn the win for Dayton, striking out two.
The Rams (13-28, 3-12 A-10) and Flyers meet again Saturday afternoon at the URI Softball Field at noon.
