KINGSTON, R.I. -- Freshman Ashley Evangelista tallied her first collegiate goal to go along with two assists as Rhode Island earned a 4-0 victory over Fordham at the URI Soccer Complex on Friday night.
Sophomore Tara Murphy notched the first shutout victory of her collegiate career, as URI (4-7-1) improves to 2-3 in Atlantic 10 play.
Amanda Thomas began the Rams' scoring at the 34:17 mark, converting a free kick from Kaylen Shimoda on the left side. It was her second goal of the season.
Just over four minutes later, Ina Bjorklid headed an Evangelista crossing pass by Fordham goalkeeper Rachel Suther, making it 2-0. It was Bjorklid's second tally of the 2009 campaign.
In the second half, Rhode Island tacked on two late goals. Evangelista made it 3-0, dribbling through two Fordham defenders before finding the back of the next in the 80th minute. Alexis Veith closed out the URI scoring shortly after, taking an Evangelista cross from the right side, and beating Suther for the goal.
Murphy made seven saves for Rhody, allowing zero goals in the full 90:00 of action. Suther made six saves for Fordham. URI outshot Fordham, 15-9 - including a 10-7 advantage in shots on-goal. Both teams attempted two corner kicks.
Rhody returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 11 when it hosts La Salle at 1 p.m. at the URI Soccer Complex.
