Rams Fall, 2-1, to George Washington in 2009 Finale

KINGSTON, R.I. -- Rhode Island closed out the 2009 regular season with a 2-1 loss at home to George Washington.

The Rams (6-12-1; 4-7 A-10) got on the scoreboard first, as Alexis Veith scored her fifth goal of the season in the 54th minute. The sophomore converted the score from a shot about 20 yards out on the left side.

GW (7-8-4; 4-5-2 A-10) responded just over five minutes later with the equalizer, as Jillian Morgan scored with a shot from the top of the box, past URI goalkeeper Tara Murphy.

The Colonials tallied the eventual gamewinner in the 78th minute, as Brittany Eger beat Murphy, 1-on-1, with a shot that went left to right.

Rhode Island had two scoring opportunities late in the match. Ashley Evangelista had a shot on-goal in the 83rd minute, but GW goalkeeper Lindsay Rowe made the save. Kaylen Shimoda had Rhody's last chance, blastied a shot off the crossbar with 15 seconds left in regulation.

Murphy made two saves for Rhode Island, while her counterpart Rowe converted seven stops for GW. URI outshot George Washington 16-7, including an 8-4 edge in shots on-goal
