Rhody Runs Past Boston College, 80-69

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Keith Cothran led five players in double figures as Rhode Island defeated Boston College, 80-69, on Sunday night.

Cothran, who was named the A-10 Player of the Week on Dec. 13, scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Runnin' Rams (8-1) to their eighth victory in nine tries.

Both teams traded baskets and leads throughout the first 10:00 of play. BC led 16-15, before a Rhody 13-4 run - started by back-to-back treys by Akeem Richmond - gave URI a 31-20 lead with 3:44 to play in the first half. Rhody led, 33-25, at the break.

In the second half, Rhode Island's hot shooting continued. The team connected on 52.9% (18-34) from the floor, never allowing Boston College to get back into the game. On the defensive end, the Rams forced 14 turnovers, equating to 15 points.

Rhody would lead by as many as 14 in the second half, after Cothran went coast-to-coast for the jam - making it 72-58 with 2:48 to go. URI sealed the victory knocking down 6-of-7 from the charity stripe.

Delroy James had 15 points and three rebounds, while Lamonte Ulmer added 13 points and four boards. Akeem Richmond (3-5 3FG) and Boston native Orion Outerbridge each had 11. Marquis Jones tied his season and career-high with 10 assists to just two turnovers. Stevie Mejia - also a Boston native - added five assists in 13 minutes of play. Will Martell had three blocked shots.

For the game, Rhode Island shot an even 50.0% (31-62), while knocking down a season-best 60.0% of its 3-point attempts (9-15). URI was 9-15 from the foul line (69.2%).

After a week off for final exams, Rhode Island returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 20 when it hosts Fairfield at the Thomas M. Ryan Center. Tip off time is set for 1 p.m.
