Baseball Falls to Bryant, 7-1

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Rhode Island sophomore Pete Mastors (Narragansett, R.I.) led the Rams with three hits in a 7-1 loss to Bryant,  Wednesday afternoon at the Bryant Baseball Complex. Rhody recorded eight hits in the loss, but stranded 11 base runners over nine innings.

The Bulldogs (14-7) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning, thanks in part to a three-run shot by Pat McKenna.

Rhody (12-7) got its lone run of the game in the top of the sixth when junior Rob DeVeney (Marlton, N.J.) crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Kenny Burns (Shelton, Conn.). DeVeney had reached base on a walk and advanced to third on a single through the right side by sophomore Jeff Cammans (Jamestown, R.I.). Cammans finished with a pair of hits on the afternoon.

Bryant tacked on three more in the bottom of the sixth off junior Dan Rossignol (Nashua, N.H.), who tossed four innings of relief. Sophomore starter Chris Pickering (Lincoln, R.I.) was charged with the loss after giving up four hits and four runs in two innings of work. Classmate Ken Graveline (Prospect, Conn.) closed out the game with two scoreless innings while Bryant starter Chris Foundas earned the win for the Bulldogs.

Rhode Island returns to action this weekend when it travels to Cincinnati for a three-game series with Xavier. The Rams and Musketeers will meet at 3 p.m. on Friday, 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at Noon.
