CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Rhode Island baseball team dropped a 10-0 decision to Boston College, Wednesday afternoon at at Shea Field. Sophomore
Jeff Cammans (Jamestown, R.I.) finished the afternoon with a pair of hits.
In the top of the first inning, Rhody loaded the bases on back-to-back-to-back walks with two outs, but a 6-4 fielder's choice ball by Cammans ended the inning and prevented the Rams from getting on the board.
The Eagles, meanwhile, went on to score two in the bottom of the frame and another in the third to lead 3-0 after three innings.
Sophomore Kenny Burns (Shelton, Conn.) had a one-out single for the Rams in the top of the second, but freshman Milan Adams (Exeter, R.I.) grounded into a double play to end the inning. In URI's next trip to the plate, sophomore Pete Mastors (Narragansett, R.I.) drew a leadoff walk but was then doubled up when junior Oliver Palmer (North Kingstown, R.I.) lined into a 5-3 double play.
Rhody reached base just four times the rest of the way as Cammans singled twice, redshirt freshman Dan Haverstick (Marlton, N.J.) picked up a base hit and senior Dan Rhault (Lincoln, R.I.) drew a one-out walk in the sixth.
The Eagles - who went on to score one in the fourth, five in the fifth and one more in the sixth - finished the afternoon with three double plays, ending the game on a 1-6-3 play in the top of the ninth.
Sophomore Chris Pickering (Lincoln, R.I.) was charged with the loss after allowing nine runs (five earned) in 4.1 innings of work. Junior reliever Dan Rossignol (Nashua, N.H.) gave up just one hit and one unearned run in 2.2 innings before sophomore Gardner Leaver (Montauk, N.Y.) pitched a 1-2-3 eighth.
Dave Laufer - who gave up just one hit over three scoreless innings of relief - got the win for BC.
The loss drops Rhode Island to 17-12-1 while Boston College improves to 20-11
The Rams are back in action on Friday afternoon when they host La Salle at 3 p.m.
