HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Rhode Island women's
volleyball team opened the 2009 season on a high note as it scored
a 3-0 sweep over Hofstra.
The Rams' match on Friday was the first of three the Rams will
take part in this weekend.
Junior Kayla
Newberg (Deer Park, Wash.) led the Rams offensively with nine
kills. Newberg also posted a .471 attack percentage, which led the
squad.
Defensively for Rhody, senior Caitlyn Welsh
(Narragansett, R.I.) led the way with 14 digs, while junior Kalyn Klaess
(Huntington Beach, Calif.) and sophomore Kayla Wilson (Santa
Monica, Calif.) each registered 13 digs.
The Rams posted set victories of 25-17, 25-21 and 25-18. As a
team, Rhody outhit Hofstra .231-.032.
URI returns to action on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. against
Marshall. The Rams final match of the tournament against Binghamton
is set for 5 p.m.
