How It Happened
Rhode Island (2-6) played well for extended stretches, but No. 15 TCU (6-1) had too much skill for the Rams. The host Horned Frogs got 11 kills from Becca Kelley and eight apiece from Emily Van Groningen and Mikayla Young to lead an offense that hit .340 overall.
In the end, TCU completed the sweep, winning 25-19, 25-12, 25-17 in the middle match of the Fight In the Fort Friday afternoon.
Set One – No. 15 TCU 25, Rhode Island 19
Rhode Island stayed with TCU throughout the first set, forcing seven attack errors and capitalizing on service struggles by the hosts, who had five service errors in the frame. The Rams led 11-10 following a
Chloe Abuto kill. TCU went on a 5-0 run - the first extended run for either side - but URI did not fade. Rhody kept it close and was down just 21-19 after a block by Abuto and
Erika Bracey. TCU scored the final four points, clinching it with Becca Kelley's fifth kill of the opening set.
Set Two – No. 15 TCU 25, Rhode Island 12
The second set saw TCU steadily pull away. Rhody trailed 8-6 following a
Havyn Rolle kill, but the Horned Frogs went on a 4-0 run that featured two Becca Kelley kills. URI got as close as 15-11, but TCU closed the set on an 8-0 run to take a 2-0 lead.
Set Three – No. 15 TCU 25, Rhode Island 17
Much like the opening set, Rhode Island hung around and kept the score close, but TCU eventually pulled away. Late in the set,
Dakota Henry snuck a ball over the set for a rare libero kill that pulled Rhody within 18-16. However, that was as close as it got. TCU ended the match with a 7-1 run to clinch the victory.
