Sept. 13, 2009

Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. -- Alexis Veith scored her first goal of the season and Jackie Fede made five saves in goal as Rhode Island earned a 1-0 victory over Towson at the URI Soccer Complex.

Veith's goal in the sixth minute was set up by Courtney David, who found her classmate on the right side - about 20 yards from the goal. Veith right-footed a blast which got past Towson goalkeeper Kristen Sample.

Both the Rams and Tigers played an even match for the next 84 minutes, with both squads making solid defensive plays in the backfield, as well as some key saves.

A shot by Towson's Erica Marshall in the 33rd minute was knocked away by Fede, hitting the crossbar before it was cleared out by the Rhode Island defense.

In the second half, URI had two scoring chances off of corner kicks. Both times, Kaylen Shimoda put the ball into the box - yielding a shot by Jennifer Barrientos in the 62nd minute and a header gone wide by Veith in the 63rd.

Towson kept attacking throughout the last 20 minutes of the match, but Fede came up with three of her five saves during that period, preserving the shutout.

For the Tigers, Sample made four saves in goal, while playing all 90:00. Rhode Island outshot Towson, 9-8 - with both teams registering five shots on-goal. URI attempted two corner kicks to just one for Towson.

Rhody returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 17 when it travels to Vermont.
