Men's Soccer Concedes Late Goal, Falls to UMass 1-0

Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island men's soccer team was edged by Massachusetts, 1-0, on Saturday night at the URI Soccer Complex. The loss drops Rhody to 2-8-2 (0-2-1) while UMass improves to 3-3-6 (1-1-1).

The Rams and Minutemen were scoreless for the first 86 minutes, until Chris Stoker sent a shot through the box and past URI goalkeeper Peyton Warwick to break the deadlock. Stoker had just subbed in less than a minute before netting what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Rhode Island nearly took the lead just 12 minutes into the game in when senior Greg Balicki blasted a shot to the far post - where only a diving stop by UMass' Chris Piekos kept the Rams off the board. Piekos came up big again in the second half, stopping a header by redshirt freshman Joey Haught and blocking sophomore Matt Ribbens' shot from point blank range. Piekos also got some help from defender David Key, who cleared senior Dwayne Williams' shot off the goal line in the 76th minute.

For the game, Rhody held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks while outshooting UMass, 16-10. Piekos finished with seven saves on the night while Warwick had six.

The Rams return to action on Friday night when they travel to Saint Joseph's for a 7 p.m. match against the Hawks.
