Box Score

KINGSTON, R.I. - Stephanie Santos netted the game's lone goal in the opening minute of the second half as the Rhode Island women's soccer team knocked off UMass by a score of 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the URI Soccer Complex.

With the win, Rhody improves its record to 2-11-1 (2-3 A-10) while UMass fall to 5-9 (2-3 A-10).

After both teams kept quiet offensively for most of the first half, Rhody recorded the first real scoring chance of the game with nine minutes remaining in the opening period as Kaylen Shimoda broke free through the defense thanks to a feed from Stephanie Santos. All alone with the keeper, Shimoda sent her shot just high of the cross bar.

URI had a similar chance just three minutes later, but this time it was Santos sending her shot just high of the cross bar. Rhody out-shot UMass by a 4-2 margin.

Rhody would strike first in the opening minute of the second half as Santos took a pass from Courtney David that left her open in the center of the box. Santos sent her shot just high enough as it tipped off the keeper's hands and into the top-left portion of the net.

One goal was all URI needed as Sasha Reiber earned the shutout in net, making two saves.

The play of the game may have been Reiber's stop at point-blank range with just under 40 minutes remaining in regulation. UMass' Meghan Collins had a look deep inside the box but Reiber was there to put a body on it.

Rhode is back in action on Oct. 22nd as they play host to Saint Joseph's. The match is set to start at 7 p.m at the URI Soccer Complex.
