URI built on its lead with a three-run third as sophomore Mike LeBel, junior Jeff Cammans and Derner all scored to put Rhode Island in front, 4-0.
A two-out rally in the top of the fifth made it 5-0 Rhody after Cammans singled to right and then crossed the plate on a single by Derner.
However, Bowling Green came back and evened the score in the bottom of the frame before plating two more in their next trip to the plate to lead 7-5 after six complete innings.
A leadoff homer by Adams got the Rams within one (7-6) in the top of the seventh but the Falcons sent one across the plate in the bottom half of the inning to go back up by a pair (8-6).
Rhode Island was finally able to put the game away in the top of the ninth when Palmer's two-run double scored senior Rob DeVeney and junior Kenny Burns before a sac-fly by senior Zoey Angulo drove Palmer - for what proved to be the winning run.
The victory improves Rhode Island to 1-7 on the season while BGSU drops to 1-7.
The Rams return to action on Monday night when they take on Sacred Heart at 5 p.m.
