KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island baseball team used a trio of two-run homers in the sixth inning to get past Bryant, 11-10, Wednedsay afternoon at Bill Beck Field.
Senior Oliver Palmer, junior Tom Coulombe and sophomore Milan Adams all went yard to help Rhody overcome an 8-5 deficit, despite having jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. For Palmer, the homerun was his second of the game while Coulombe's was his second in as many days. Adams, meanwhile, finished with three hits and five RBI after ripping a three-run double in the bottom of the first.
Junior Kyle Borden led all URI players at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a pair of runs and extending his hit streak to seven games. Redshirt sophomore Dan Haverstick also scored twice as he singled to right and was walked twice.
Rhode Island (16-14) came out and plated five runs in the first inning to take an early advantage. Palmer got things started with a one-out solo shot to centerfield before back-to-back-to-back singles by Borden, Coulombe and junior Evan Laude made it 2-0. Haverstick then drew a two-out walk to load the bases for Milan Adams, whose double to left put the Rams ahead 5-0.
Bryant (13-16) began to chip away at the lead with one run in the second and another in the third before plating five in the fourth and one more in the fifth to take an 8-5 lead.
However, URI went back on top for good after its explosive sixth inning. The Bulldogs got within one (11-10) after scoring once in the seventh and again in the eighth but junior closer Gardner Leaver entered the game and retired the final four batters to help Rhody get the win.
Senior reliever Dan Rossignol got the win on the mound - his team-leading sixth of the season - while Leaver picked up his sixth save. Bryant's David O'Brien was charged with the loss.
Rhode Island is back in action this weekend when it hosts Massachusetts in a three-game Atlantic 10 series at Bill Beck Field.The Rams and Minutemen will face off at 3 p.m. on Friday, 1 p.m. on Saturday and again at Noon on Sunday.
