KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island sophomore Jamie
Eckmayer (Harrington Park, Ill.) scored the overtime
game-winner as the Rams defeated Siena, 2-1, on Saturday night
at the URI Soccer Complex. Eckmayer's goal - his second of the
season - came in the 95th minute to give Rhody the victory it its
home opener.
The win is URI's first over the Saints since the 2000 season -
when Siena head coach/Rhody alum Gareth Elliott was
a junior for the Rams. It also marks the fourth consecutive
overtime match between the two squads.
After a scoreless first half, senior Greg Balicki
(Wilbraham, Mass.) put the Rams on the board just seven minutes
into the second frame when he netted his first goal
of the season off a pass from junior Reece Markman
(Dallas, Texas). Markman - who took a feed from classmate David Malloy
(Oxford, England) - made a run up the right flank before finding
Balicki at the far post for the 1-0 advantage.
Siena (1-4-0), however, came back and evened things at the 59:21
mark when Steve Covino sent a free kick into the box where Anthony
Tagliaferri was able to beat redshirt junior goalkeeper Peyton Warwick
(Prairie Village, Kan.) to make it a 1-1 game.
The Rams (2-3-0) nearly put the game away in the 83rd minute -
when a shot by Malloy deflected off the post - but would have to
wait until overtime to clinch the victory.
Warwick finished the game with four saves while Siena's Phil
Chabot made nine stops. As a team, the Rams outshot the Saints,
19-12, while both teams recorded four corner kicks.
Rhode Island returns to action on Tuesday afternoon when it
travel to Boston College for a 4 p.m. meeting with the
nationally-ranked Eagles.
