PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Rhode Island men's
soccer team fell to Providence, 2-1, in the season-opener for both
teams on Thursday afternoon at PC's Glay Field.
The loss marks the just the seventh time ever - and the first
time since 2003 - that the Friars have knocked off the Rams. URI
entered the match holding a 28-6-4 advantage in the all-time
series.
Rhody (0-1-0) got on the board first when senior defender Dwayne
Williams sent a long ball toward the Providence goal, which PC
defender Bryan Minogue headed over his own keeper at the 1:17
mark.
The Friars came back with an equalizer in the 26th minute as
Providence's Greg Davis took advantage of a defensive mishap by the
Rams and got the ball past redshirt junior Peyton Warwick to
even things at up at 1-1.
Rhody nearly reclaimed the lead in the 29th minute when
sophomore Thomas Lindroos'
centering pass found classmate Jamie Eckmayer
open in front of the goal, but Eckmayer's one-timer sailed just
over the crossbar to keep the score locked at one apiece.
Davis struck again for the Friars, this time at the 87:04 mark,
heading a pass from Daniel Fabian into the right corner for the 2-1
victory.
For the game, PC held a 17-10 advantage in shots and a 9-3
advantage in corner kicks.
Warwick finished with seven stops in goal for the Rams while
Jhojan Obando turned away four for the Friars.
The Rams return to action on Monday, when they meet either Brown
or Bryant in the consolation game of the inaugural Ocean State
Soccer Classic.
