TAMPA - The Rhode Island men's soccer team
suffered a 2-0 setback to No. 23 USF on Wednesday night at the USF
Soccer Stadium. The loss drops Rhody to 2-6-0 on the season while
the Bulls improve to 5-2-1.
USF leading scorer Bernardo Anor netted a pair of first-half
tallies - both off of corner kicks by Javed Mohammed, just three
minutes apart - and never looked back, outshooting Rhody by a 7-0
margin over the first 45 minutes.
"We had a little trouble defending their corners early on," said
head coach John
O'Connor. "Giving up two early goals like that definitely
hurt."
The Rams regrouped at the half and rebounded with six shots and
four corners in the second frame, but were unable to find the back
of the net. Junior Reece Markman and
freshman Tom
Palmer each recorded a pair of shots for URI.
"We had a few decent chances in the second half," added
O'Connor. "We just couldn't finish any of those opportunities."
For the game, the Bulls outshot the Rams, 14-6, and held a 7-5
advantage in corner kicks. Redshirt junior Peyton Warwick
finished with five saves in goal while his counterpart, Jeff
Attinella, made two stops for USF. For Attinella, it marked his
22nd career shutout - a new USF record.
The Rams return to action on Saturday night when they host
Fairfield at 7 p.m.
