Rhody Falls in Double Overtime to Iona

How it Happened:

The Rams (3-1-0) lost their first game of the season to Iona (1-2-1) in double overtime 2-1. Melissa Frederick scored the deciding goal in the 108th minute. Laura Jackson and Sofia Sanchez recorded the assist on the play. Frederick received the ball from midfield and broke away from defenders and chipped it over the goalie at the 6-yard box.

In the first half Rhode Island started off quick against Iona in the seventh minute when Ashley Evangelista (Methuen, Mass) crossed the ball from the corner line and Ellie Bailes (Maidstone, Kent, England) was there to put it away for a 1-0 lead. It was Bailes' second goal of the season and Evangelista's second assist. Iona retaliated to tie it up at 1-1 in the 16th minute. Leah Taylor scored her first goal of the season off a free kick from 25-yards out. The game was tied throughout the second half and went into overtime.

  • The Rams and Gaels tied on total shots for the game at 12 and shots on goal with 6.Each team also tied on corners with three a piece. 
  • Rhode Island had 19 fouls to Iona's 14.

  • Rhode Island is 5-1-0 against Iona all-time.


What's Next:

Rhode Island returns home to face the Bryant Bulldogs on Sunday, Sept. 2 and the Holy Cross Crusaders on Tuesday, Sept. 4. Game times are 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively. Both games are being held at the URI Soccer Complex.
