How It Happened
Rhode Island (5-8) held Brown to 30 percent shooting from the floor en route to a 59-47 victory over its in-state rival Friday night.
Junior Xavier Munford scored 14 of his game-high 18 points in the second half to lead a Ram offense that struggled to find a scoring rhythm. Munford has now scored in double digits in the second half of the last four games Rhode Island has played.
Brown (4-8) made just 16-of-53 shot from the floor, including 4-of-17 from beyond the arc. The Bears also managed just 11-of-21 at the free throw line.
Inside the Box Score
* Senior Ryan Brooks received praise from head coach Dan Hurley for his energy on the boards. Brooks had a team-best nine rebounds, eight of which came in the second half. Rhode Island outrebounded Brown 48-37 for the night.
* Xavier Munford entered the game ranked second in the Atlantic 10 with a scoring average of 17.4 points per game, and he was averaging 10 points per game after halftime. He topped his season average with 18 points, 14 of which came in the second half. He added four rebounds and two assists.
* Sophomore Mike Powell and senior Andre Malone and also scored in double figures, finishing with 16 points and 12 points, respectively. Malone scored 10 points in the first half.
* Of the 16 points for Powell, nine came via free throws. He was 9-of-13 from the line, with the bulk of the points coming down the stretch.
* The 14 points for Brown was the lowest total in a half by a Rhode Island opponent this season. The next lowest was 20 points in the second half of the George Mason game. Brown's 47 points were the fewest allowed by the Rams this season.
* As a team, Rhode Island had 11 assists, led by Powell with six. The Rams are 4-2 when they have double figures in assists, and 1-6 when held to single digits.
* Sophomore T.J. Buchanan did a lot of little things well for the Rams. He finished with six rebounds, five points and two assists in 18 minutes.
* After committing 10 first-half turnovers, the Rams had just four after the break.
* Rhode Island struggled from the floor in the first half, making just 8-of-31 attempts (25.8 percent). It was a different story in the second half, as Rhody was 10-for-24 (41.7 percent) after the break.
