Leyh Continues Scoring Streak in 2-1 Loss to Saint Joseph's

How It Happened:

Rhody started off the scoring in the second half after a scoreless first half. Samantha Leyh was able to head the ball in the goal for the third time this season. Alex Stanton and Donika Murray got in on the play with assists on the goal.

When the 87th minute rolled around Emily Gingrich scored an unassisted goal to force the game into overtime.

2:18 into the overtime period Mo Hawkins ended the game with a goal, she was assisted by Shannon Westhead and Shannon Farrell. It was another goal off of a header.

"We played well today and created enough chances to win the game, I was proud of our effort level and how we responded emotionally from a tough second half on Friday," head coach Michael Needham said after the game. " I look forward to getting back on the road next weekend to play a very good Saint Louis team."

  • With the loss, Rhode Island drops to 5-11-0, while Saint Joseph's improves to 6-6-3 overall.
  • Rhode Island held a 16-13 advantage in total shots, while both teams totaled four shots on goal.
  • Rhody out-cornered the Hawks, 6-4.
  • Both teams committed 13 fouls.
  • Chelsea Broghamer played the entire game in goal and saved two shots on goal while allowing two goals. Her record now stands at 2-5-0.


Additional Notes:

  • Rhode Island is now 6-7-1 all time against Saint Joseph's and 0-2-0 under head coach Michael Needham.
  • Rhody drops to 1-1-0 when playing in overtime this season.
  • The win dropped URI's record to 2-6-0 on the road this season. 
  • Leyh's goal was her seventh of the season and the tenth of her career.
  • Murray and Stanton both had their first assists of the season. It was the first assist of both of their careers.
