Total Team Effort Leads Rams Past Billikens, 3-2

How It Happened
After dropping the opener 25-16, Rhode Island responded with a convincing 25-15 victory in the second set to even the score up at 1-1.

Set #3 featured eight ties and two lead changes but ultimately saw the Billikens coming out on top 25-22 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

However, the Rams responded with their best defensive set of the season, allowing SLU just seven points and holding the Billikens to a -.077 attack percentage (6k/8e/26ta) while going .550 (12k/1e/20ta) at the other end of the court.

In the fifth and final set, Rhode Island led 9-7 but five straight SLU points gave the Billikens a 12-9 advantage. However, the Rams stormed back and closed out the match with 6-0 run to claim the 3-2 victory.

Inside the Box Score

  • The win marked Rhode Island's third ever over the Billikens. URI is now 3-14 against SLU, having won the last two meetings between the teams. Prior to last season's victory, Rhody had dropped 11 straight to Saint Louis, dating back to the 2006 season.
  • Franki Darnold led all players with 21 kills. It marks the fifth time this season she records 20+ kills and the 21st time she finishes in double digits.
  • Catie Steffen also turned in a double-digit kill performance, recording 11 to go along with five aces, three digs and an assist.
  • Lena Vedder nearly made it three Rams in double figures as she ended the night with nine kills and three blocks.
  • Callan Kinnan turned in a team-high 43 assists and had eight digs, three blocks and four kills with zero attack errors on six attempts.
  • Jill Anderson also had zero errors on the night. She totaled nine attacks and finished with four kills.
  • Layne Self led all players with five blocks. She also had six digs and five kills.
  • Lizzy Scanlon (13) and Britta Baarstad (10) both registered double-digit digs for the Rams.
  • Kelly Rosenberg recorded nine digs on the night and was instrumental down the stretch as she served for the Rams final five points to seal the win in the fifth set.
