Box Score SETTING THE SCENE
The URI women's soccer team played an exhibition game against the Hartford Hawks earlier today and came away with a 5-0 victory. The game started off really evenly then late in the first half the URI offense started to shine.
Chelsea Gates (South Kingstown, R.I.) scored the first goal of the game in the 42nd minute. She found the open field, ran for the goal, and shot a rocket past goaltender Alison Koerkenmeier. URI was then able to add four more goals in the second half.
A variety of players got into the game and had significant contributions. The five goals came from five separate players and eight different players added points to the box score. Three of the Rams' goalkeepers got into the game and made some great plays to stop the Hawks offensive attack, coming away with five total saves.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Goals were scored by Gates, Samantha Leyh (Wall, N.J.), Ari Stanton (Cranston, R.I.), Lucy Gildein (Topscott, Mass.) and Nicole Brennan (Old Bridge, N.J.).
- Leyh and Stanton both finished with multiple points.
- Katie Nickles (Slingerlands, N.Y.) played 45 minutes in goal and saved four shots while not allowing a single goal.
- Rhode Island was able to limit themselves to only two fouls as opposed to Hartford's seven.
- Leyh's diving header goal was assisted by a long Jennifer Barrientos (Reseda, Calif.) pass.
- Brennan's goal was the result of a defensive steal by Brennan herself.
