How It Happened
Rhode Island (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season as it stayed close to Lehigh (2-1) in the opening two sets, but ultimately was swept in the finale of the Lehigh Classic Saturday. The Moutain Hawks defeated Rhody 25-23, 27-25, 25-19.
Lehigh libero Rachel Charles had 20 digs and four assists in the finale en route to tournament MVP honors. Kaylynn Genemaras led the Mountain Hawks with 17 kills to power a Lehigh offense that had a .230 attack percentage as a team. After a first set that saw nine ties and two lead changes, Rhode Island managed just two leads the rest of the way.
Inside the Box Score
- Freshman setter Callan Kinnan had her second consecutive double-double, finishing with 36 assists and 13 digs. Through her first three career matches, Kinnan already has 100 assists.
- Kinnan and fellow freshman Layne Self made their first career starts in the match. Self had eight blocks, including three solo efforts.
- Sophomore Franki Darnold was the lone Ram to reach double digits in kills with 11. She added eight digs. She had a team-high 34 kills on the weekend.
- Sophomore Cate Seman had another strong all-around game with seven kills, 11 digs and four block assists.
All-Tournament Team
Rhode Island sophomore Franki Darnold and senior Jill Anderson were named to the eight-player Lehigh Classic All-Tournament Team. Joining Darnold and Anderson were Lauren Behren of Saint Peter's, New Hampshire's Morgan Thatcher and Destiny Tolliver, and Amy Matula, Leah Turner and Rachel Charles of Lehigh. Charles was the tournament MVP.
