How It Happened
Rhode Island (2-2) lost its opening match in the Valpo Popcorn Classic Friday evening. The Rams were swept by Iowa (4-0) 25-21, 25-12, 25-22.

In the opening set, Rhode Island had more kills and fewer attack errors, but a 6-0 run to start the set by the Hawkeyes was too much to overcome. The Rams managed to tie the set 12-12, but never held a lead in the opener. A Caroline Casey block pulled the Rams within 20-19, but Iowa never relinquished the lead.

The second set was all Iowa. The Hawkeyes again never trailed in the set, and with the score 15-12, Iowa reeled off 10 straight points.

Rhody's best stretch came in the third set, which was a back-and-forth affair. Trailing 20-16, the Rams ran off five straight points to take a 21-20 lead. Britta Baarstad had a pair of kills, Lena Vedder had a kill and a block and Franki Darnold had a service ace during the spurt. However, Iowa closed out the match with a 5-1 run of its own.
