How it Happened
Freshman David Hopkins put Rhode Island (1-8) on the board in the top of the third as he singled to right and later scored on a bunt single by classmate RJ Warnock.

Charleston Southern (7-2) evened it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, however, and then exploded for a seven-run sixth to move ahead 8-1.

The Rams got one back in the top of the eighth as senior Pat Quinn sent a two-out single down the right field line to plate Warnock, who had singled through the left side with one away. After three quick outs by redshirt freshman reliever Matt Ferraiolo, the Rams picked up where they left off. Sophomore Chase Livingston got things started with a leadoff walk and freshman Chris Hess followed with a double down the left field line. Senior Andre Malone then grounded out to score Livingston before sophomore Derek Gardella's pinch hit single scored Hess and made it an 8-4 game.

Unfortunately though, that was as close as the Rams would get as CSU's Evan Nations retired the next two batters to end URI's late rally.

Inside the Box Score

  • Warnock led the Rams' offense with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. He also scored once and drove in a run.
  • Quinn finished with a pair of hits and an RBI.
  • Warnock, Hopkins, Hess and Livingston accounted for each of Rhody's four runs on the afternoon.
  • Redshirt freshman Ben Wessel (0-1) took the loss for Rhode Island. Making his first career start, he allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out four and issuing just one walk over 5.2 innings.
  • Senior Nick Narodowy relieved Wessel with two away in the sixth, but was unable to get himself out of the inning. Each of the six batters he faced reached - one via hit by pitch, two by doubles and three with singles.
  • Redshirt junior Brendan Doonan then fanned three over 1.1 innings of relief before Ferraiolo tossed a three-up, three-down eighth.

What's Next
The Rams will wrap up their southern swing this weekend at the Caravelle Resort Tournament in Myrtle Beach. There, Rhody will take on host Coastal Carolina on Friday, James Madison on Saturday and Marshall on Sunday. All games will be played at Pellicans Ballpark.
