Box Score 2 How it Happened
Rhode Island (1-10) was swept by UMBC in a doubleheader Tuesday, falling to the Retrievers by scores of 9-1 and 6-0.
Rhody led 1-0 after 4.5 innings in the first game. After the first two UMBC batters were retired to start the fifth, the Retrievers (14-4) scored five runs on just three hits, benefitting from four walks plus a two-run home run by Chelsea Bertoglio.
Bertoglio, who finished the day with 4-for-6 with two home runs and seven runs batted in, broke open the second game with a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning.
UMBC freshmen pitchers Jessica Holte and Kelly Lane combined to allow just five hits and one run in the two games. Both starters went the distance, as Holte (9-0) allowed one unearned run on two hits and Lane (3-3) pitched a shutout, giving up just three singles.
Inside the Box Score:
- Senior Stacey Fox singled once in each game and now has a three-game hitting streak.
- Sophomore Lauren Klepchick singled in the second game and scored Rhody's lone run on the day in the first game.
- Sophomore Emily Hendricks and freshman Danielle Gariglio each had one hit for the Rams.
- In both games, Rhode Island had early chances. In the opener, the Rams had two runners in scoring position with one out of the first inning, but came up empty.
- In the second game, Rhode Island loaded the bases with one out in the first inning, then had runners on second and third with no outs in the second inning. Both times, the Rams were unable to score.
- Fox and senior Jocelyn Mattison were each hit by a pitch in the second game. Fox was hit for the 19th time in her career, which moved into a tie with Meg Kelly for second on the school's all-time list. Mattison was hit for the 12th time, putting her eighth all-time in Rhody history.
- Rhode Island has dropped its last five games. It has been held to one or no runs in 10 of 11 games this season.
Stat of the Day
0 – Rhode Island did not many any errors in 46 chances on the day. It was the first time this season the Rams have gone back-to-back games without an error.
What's Next
The Rams are slated to play a doubleheader Wednesday, March 12 at Maryland-Eastern Shore. The first game starts at 1 p.m. Rhody returns to UMBC for the Dawg Pound Invitational later in the week. The Rams will face Drexel, UMBC, Hampton and Niagara in that tournament.
