How it Happened
UMass Lowell (6-2) did not record a hit over the first four innings, but managed to score twice in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead over the Rams. The River Hawks added two more in the fifth and another pair in the seventh to stretch their lead to 6-0 before Rhody even got on the board.
URI finally got something going in the bottom of the seventh when TJ Lynch and Derek Gardella were hit in back-to-back at-bats. David Hopkins was then walked to load the bases before Nick DeRegis smacked a two-out single through the left side to score Lynch. Tim Caputo followed with a walk that plated Gardella and made it a 6-2 game.
UML added another in the top of the eighth, but Rhody responded with a pair in the bottom of the frame to make it 7-4. Gardella had a hand in both runs as he doubled down the left field line to score Dan Hetzel before crossing the plate himself on a sac-fly by Chris Hess.
That was as close as URI would get though, as UMass Lowell scored once more in the ninth for the 8-4 victory.
