Box Score 2 How it Happened
Rhode Island (1-8) dropped its first two games of spring break, losing to Delaware State 4-0 before losing to host Longwood 9-1 at the Longwood Invitational Saturday.
In the first game, Delaware State (6-2) scored one run in the top of the first inning. The Hornets loaded the bases with one out before Jordan Stamps singled to center to drive in Nicole Gazzola. Rhody starter Ashley Dumoulin retired the next two batters to limit the damage.
Rochelle Sablay launched a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the third to extend the lead to 3-0. Stamps added a solo home run in the seventh inning for insurance. Delaware State starter Vanessa Ciocatto did the rest, blanking Rhode Island on three hits. Ciocatto (2-2) faced just two batters more than the minimum.
In the second game, Longwood (7-4) took advantage of a sloppy inning by the Rams in the bottom of the second inning to take early control. The Lancers scored six runs on just one hit, as five walks and an error did the Rams in. The Rams were unable to mount a comeback.
