Rams Split One-Run Games at Fairfield

How it Happened
Rhode Island (11-24) and Fairfield (15-17) split a pair of one-run games Thursday, with the Rams winning the opener, 4-3, in eight innings. The Stags took the second game, 2-1.

In the opener, Rhody scratched out the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the eighth. Freshman Marylynn Muldowney singled up the middle and moved to second With two outs in the top if Senior Sam Bedore (8-6) pitched four scoreless innings of relief in the opener to pick up her second win in as many days. In the bottom of the eighth, Fairfield (14-17) put the potential tying and winning runs on base with one out, but Bedore got consecutive pop outs to end the game.

Game two ended with a play at the plate. Trailing 2-1 with one out, Rhode Island had runners at the corners. Muldowney hit a ball to shortstop and was retired at first. Junior Megan Congro tried to score on the play, but was cut down at the plate to end the game.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Freshman Jenna Cubello hit her first career home run in the first game. The blast was a three-run shot in the top of the second inning. After collecting three extra base hits in her first 31 games, Cubello has three (one home run, one triple, one double) in her last three games.
  • Rhode Island won the opener despite being held to four hits, three of which were singles.
  • Senior Stacey Fox had four hits on the day, including three in the second game. She also scored the lone Rhody run in the nightcap.
  • Cubello, Marylynn Muldowney and Lauren Klepchick each had one hit in both ends of the doubleheader.
  • Freshman Ashley Dumoulin (1-7) pitched well despite taking the loss in the second game. In 5.1 innings of work, she gave up two runs on just three hits and three walks. Dumoulin struck out a pair.
  • Sam Bedore has not allowed a run in her last 7.2 innings of work, lowering her earned run average for the season to 3.05.


Stat of the Day
117 – With her appearance in the first game, senior Sam Bedore made the 117th appearance of her career, setting the school's all-time mark. Bedore moved ahead of Gwen Rack, who pitched in 116 games from 1999-2002.

7 – Over her last four games, freshman Jenna Cubello has seven runs batted in. She is now third on the team with 11 RBI this season.

Rhode Island continues its road trip with the first of back-to-back Atlantic 10 doubleheaders at George Mason Friday. The first game begins at  and La Salle Saturday.
