Rams Pick Up Pair of Wins With Sweep of Saint Joseph's

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

How it Happened
Rhode Island (9-20, 4-2 A-10) got strong pitching from sophomore Caitlin Kennedy and senior Sam Bedore as it swept Saint Joseph's in a doubleheader Saturday, winning the first game, 2-1, before taking the second game, 6-3.

Senior Jocelyn Mattison drove in four runs – two in each game – and scored another to lead the offense as Rhody beat the Hawks (11-13, 2-2 A-10) for the first time since 2008. Saint Joseph's were 9-0-1 against the Rams in the last 10 meetings, and the last time Rhode Island swept the Hawks was in 2001, when Rhody won a doubleheader by scores of 2-1 and 2-0 on April 13, 2001.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Sophomore Caitlin Kennedy (2-8) pitched arguably the best game of her career, going 5.1 innings in the opener, allowing just one run on three hits. In her last two outings, Kennedy has allowed one run in 7.1 innings of work.
  • Bedore (6-5) had a banner day, pitching 1.2 innings in the first game to save the win for Kennedy before pitching a complete game with five strikeouts in the second contest. On the day, Bedore threw 8.2 innings, allowed just one earned run on eight hits and struck out eight batters.
  • Senior Jocelyn Mattison doubled, singled twice, drove in four runs and scored once on the day. She drove in both runs in the first game, then knocked in the first two runs of the nightcap. She is tied for the team lead with 12 RBI.

  • Freshman Ali Summers singled twice and drove in one run. She started both ends of the doubleheader at catcher.
  • Junior Megan Congro had a spectacular day in right field. During the first game, she saved a run when she made a diving catch on a sinking line drive in the top of fourth with runner on second and two outs. The next inning, Congro added a diving catch deep in the right-center gap to end the top of the fifth inning.
  • Senior Stacey Fox scored three runs on the day. She also moved into second place in school history by getting hit by a pitch for the 20th time in her career. Fox now has scored 56 runs in her career, tying her for 24th place with Alyssa Martino (2004-07).
  • Before the second game, the Rhody starters were joined on the field by members of the Under-12 Rhode Island Rebels softball team (pictured below).
