NEWTON, Mass. - Rhode Island women's rowing head coach Shelagh Donohoe was inducted into the New Agenda: Northeast Hall of Fame at a luncheon at the Woodland Golf Club in Newton, Mass. Sunday.
Now in her 10th season with the Rams, Donohoe has led Rhode Island to four Atlantic 10 championships – winning titles in 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2013. With the title in 2013, Donohoe and the Rams qualified for the NCAA Championship for the first time in program history.
A three-time Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year (2007, 2008, 2010), Donohoe has seen 46 of her athletes earn all-conference recognition. She coached the program's first All-American (Kate Capistran, 2013) and has had eight rowers earned CRCA All-New England honors. In the classroom, 39 of her student-athletes have received National Scholar-Athlete recognition.
A silver medalist for the U.S. Rowing Team at the 1992 Barcelona Games, Donohoe also competed in three world championships, earning silver medals in both 1990 and 1991. She returned to the national program in 2014, coaching the U.S. ParaRowing LTA Mixed Doubles boat at the at the 2014 World Championships in Amsterdam. Last summer, she coached the U.S. ParaRowing LTA 4+ team at the World Championships on Lake Aiguebelette in France.
Before coaching at URI, Donohoe spent 10 years coaching at Northeastern University and also had stints with Boston University and Harvard. She was part of the coaching staff which saw the Huskies earn invites to four NCAA Championships. She was the New England Assistant Coach of the Year in 2004, and coached the U.S. Junior Women's National Team in 1994, where the team rowed at the Junior World Championships in Munich, Germany.
The New Agenda: Northeast is an organization that promotes the advancement and recognizes the achievements of girls and women in sports throughout New England.
Donohoe was nominated and selected by the current Hall of Fame members. She was chosen for her outstanding qualifications and significant contributions to girls and women in sports.
