How it Happened
Rhode Island (3-6) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Mike Corin doubled down the left field line to score both Derek Gardella and Tim Caputo. Rhody added another in the second - on an RBI single by Jordan Powell - before erupting for four more in the third.
Gardella got things started with a lead-off walk before Corin was hit by a pitch. Both runners then advanced on an wild pitch to set up Mike Sherburne's sac-fly to center field. Corin then crossed the plate on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.
Chris Hess kept the rally going with a double down the left field line before stealing third and scoring easily on Nick DeRegis' one-out triple. DeRegis went on to score Rhody's seventh run of the game on a ground out by Matt O'Neil.
Starter Ben Wessel kept things moving along quickly, facing just three over the minimum through five scoreless innings. He was relieved in the sixth by Evan Flanagan, who needed just 16 pitches to get through two 1-2-3 frames.
The Rams tacked on two more in the bottom of the seventh after Sherburne scored on another RBI groundout by O'Neil and Connor Foreman made it 9-0 on a failed pickoff attempt by Brown's Dante Bosnic.
Brown (1-10) managed to get on the board once in the eighth and once in the ninth, but that was as close as the Bears would get.
