KINGSTON, R.I. - Due to icy conditions on the Connecticut River, the Massachusetts-Rhode Island race to the Narrow River Saturday morning. The Narrow River had a little more open water, but the conditions were still challenging.
Faced with 35-degree temperatures, wet snow and wind, the teams conducted a 4x1000 meter scrimmage. Both teams were faced with an entire week of land training, so the chance to get on the water was viewed as a welcome opportunity.
"We have been challenged by the amount of ice on our river," said Rhode Island Head Coach
Shelagh Donohoe. "An entire week of land training is not ideal, but our team has responded well.
"Racing UMass requires a high level of composure and execution. We saw that from our team today. While I was happy with our performance today, we still have plenty of work to do; more water time is going to allow us to reach our full potential. This team is focused and unified by one common goal."
Rhode Island races next at the Cornell's Nordic Nine. The Rams will face Buffalo and Boston University in the first round of racing, and Cornell and Penn in the second round of racing.
