How it Happened
Rhody (13-12-1, 6-3) jumped on the board right away, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first and adding another in the bottom of the second to lead 3-0 before St. Joe's made it 3-1 in the top of the third.

The Rams tacked on two more in the bottom of the inning however, as Mike Corin tripled to plate Ryan Olmo before coming around to score on a two-out RBI single by Mike Sherburne. Two innings later, Chris Hess' ground-rule double hopped the fence in straightaway center field and drove in Martin Taveras for the 6-1 Rhody advantage.

The Hawks (10-17, 3-5) managed to scratch a run across in both the seventh and the eighth, but that was as close as they would get. With one out and runners on first and second in the top of the ninth, Brad Applin came on and got Matt Maul to fly out to right before Tim Caputo snared a hard-hit liner headed for the left-center gap for the final out of the game.

Inside the Box Score

  • With a 4-1 performance this past week, Rhode Island pushes its record above .500 for the first time this year at 13-12-1.
  • URI also has matched last season's win total (13-40) with a minimum of 21 regular-season games left to play.
  • With the sweep of Saint Joseph's, the Rams have now claimed each of the last 13 regular-season series with the Hawks. Since 2000, URI is 35-4 against SJU in regular-season games.
  • Rhode Island's 11 hits on the afternoon mark the third time in the last four games that URI finishes with 10+. For perspective, the Rams registered double-digit hits just twice over their first 16 games this season.
  • Eight of Rhody's nine starters reached base in the win over St. Joe's, with junior Ryan Olmo as well as redshirt sophomores Chris Hess and Mike Corin each collecting a pair of hits.
  • Corin also scored twice and drove in a pair of runs on an RBI double and an RBI triple. He has now been on base in each of his last 19 games played.
  • Hess had two RBI as well, while Olmo crossed the plate twice.
  • Sophomore Martin Taveras was 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored. His fifth-inning single extended his hit streak to eight consecutive games.
  • Junior Chase Livingston reached twice - on a base hit and a walk - and drove in a run with his second-inning sacrifice fly.
  • Junior Lou Distasio earned the win, allowing only one hit - to the game's first batter - over six complete innings. He gave up just one run, which was unearned, and finished the day with five strikeouts.
  • Junior Brad Applin closed things out in the top of the ninth, getting the final two outs of the game for his first save of the season.
  • Freshman Dom Grillo worked through two innings of relief, allowing just one run and striking out two.
