How it Happened
Leading 2-0 after Jordan Powell scored on a wild pitch in the first and Mike Foley scored on a passed ball in the second, Rhode Island (4-8) erupted for eight runs in the fourth inning - all of which came with two away.
Powell got the rally started with an RBI single that plated Kevin Heiss. After a walk to Connor Foreman, Chris Hess doubled to left to drive in Powell and Martin Figueroa followed with a two-run single that pushed across both Foreman and Hess to make it 6-0 Rhody. Derek Gardella kept things going with a two-run homer before Mike Corin reached on an error, which set up Chase Livingston's two-run shot that put the Rams on top 10-0.
Davidson (7-8) got a run back in the bottom of the inning, and added three more in the sixth, but a two-run home run by Hess put Rhode Island up 12-4 in the top of the seventh.
After an hour-long rain delay, play resumed with Jason Blanchard getting three straight ground outs in the bottom of the eighth. Sam Ilario then singled to drive in Jesse Lee in the top of the ninth but Davidson did not go quietly. The Wildcats managed to load the bases in the bottom of the frame, but Evan Flanagan got a pair of strikeouts and a game-ending foul out to seal the 13-4 win.
