How it Happened
Northeastern (11-12) jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs on four hits in the top of the first. A third-inning solo shot by Keith Kelly gave Huskies a 4-0 advantage before a two-out RBI double made it 5-0 in the top of the fourth.
Rhode Island (9-12) got three straight singles to open the bottom of the fifth but only managed to push across one run, on a balk by Northeastern's Nate Boreges. The Rams tacked on another the following inning - when Ryan Olmo scored on a base hit by Mike Corin - to make it a 5-2 game.
That was as close as Rhody would get however as the Huskies scored again in the ninth for the 6-2 victory.
Inside the Box Score
- Rhode Island finished the day with 10 hits to Northeastern's 11. All 10 of URI's were singles while the Huskies mixed in two doubles, a triple and a home run.
- Northeastern also stole five bases on the afternoon. Rhode Island, meanwhile, did not attempt a stolen base for just the sixth time in 21 games this season.
- Sophomore Jordan Powell turned in his team-leading fourth 3-hit game of the season. He has now reached base in each of Rhody's last 10 games.
- Five different players went 1-for-4 while redshirt sophomore Chris Hess and redshirt freshman Laurence Hill both went 1-for-3 with a walk.
- Senior Ryan Olmo and redshirt junior Matt O'Neil each scored a run for the Rams. Redshirt junior Mike Corin had URI's lone RBI of the game.
- Freshman Jason Blanchard made his first career start against the Huskies, but was charged with the loss as he gave up four runs on five hits and a pair of walks. He also recorded three strikeouts over his three innings on the hill.
- Sophomore Nick Johnson and senior Brad Applin each tossed two innings of relief for the Rams. Johnson was responsible for Northeastern's fifth run of the day and struck out two while allowing two hits. Applin, meanwhile, gave up just one hit over two shutout frames.
- Redshirt junior Matt Ferraiolo took the hill in the top of the eighth and struck out the first three batters he faced before giving up a run in the top of the ninth. The three Ks matched his career-high for a relief appearance.
- Sophomore Dom Grillo recorded the final two outs of the ninth, getting back-to-back strikeouts with the bases loaded.
