How it Happened
Rhode Island (13-19) wasted absolutely no time getting on the scoreboard as leadoff hitter Chris Hess homered to left field in Rhody's first at-bat of the game.

Quinnipiac (14-21) pulled ahead in the top of the sixth, first evening the score on an RBI groundout before taking a 2-1 lead on a run-scoring double. Back-to-back walks then put Bobcats on all three bases, but Dom Grillo came out of the pen and prevented any further damage with an inning-ending strikeout.

The Rams put runners on in the bottom of the frame - as well as in the eighth and the ninth - but were unable to score again, dropping their second consecutive game by a single run.

Inside the Box Score

  • Redshirt sophomore Chris Hess led off the bottom of the first with his fifth home run of the season and second in as many days. In Rhody's last two games, he has homered twice, doubled twice, scored five runs and driven in four.
  • Sophomore Jordan Powell singled in his first two at-bats, extending his streak to eight consecutive plate appearances where he reached base. Overall, he has reached base in each of his last 20 games played.
  • Freshman Brett McManus was 2-for-4 on the afternoon. He has now recorded multiple hits - and has combined to go 8-for-18 (.444) - over the last week for the Rams.
  • Junior Martin Figueroa recorded his team-leading 13th double of the season in the bottom of the fifth. He now leads the team with 18 extra-base hits overall.
  • Redshirt freshman Laurence Hill had a pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth. In three pinch-hit plate appearances this season, Hill has singled twice and drawn a walk.
  • In just his sixth game of the year in left field, redshirt junior Mike Corin recorded his second outfield assist in the top of the second when he threw a Quinnipiac runner out at the plate.
  • Junior Evan Flanagan made his first career start for the Rams and went four scoreless with four strikeouts. He also initiated a 1-5-3 double play in the top of the third.
  • Freshman Jason Blanchard replaced Flanagan and retired the Bobcats in order in the fifth, but was charged with the loss after getting into trouble in the sixth. There, he gave up two runs on three hits and a pair of walks before exiting the game with the bases loaded and two away.
  • Sophomore Dom Grillo got Rhody out of that jam, ending the sixth with his first of four strikeouts on the afternoon. He went on to finish the game for the Rams, tossing a career-high 3.1 innings of relief while allowing just two hits and walking none.
  • Brandon Shileikis picked up the win for the Bobcats, allowing just one run on eight hits over five innings. The Quinnipiac bullpen limited Rhody to just two hits the rest of the way.
