Rhode Island's Varsity 8+ finished third in its heat Sunday in a weather-shortened events Sunday morning at the Doc Hosea Invitational Regatta in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
Despite cold temperatures with high cross-tail winds, the water was nearly flat for Sunday's racing. After teams cleared a couple inches of snow off the boats and docks, teams took the water in what started in near-glassy water conditions that got more challenging as the day wore on.
Rhode Island was very competitive in the Varsity 8+ race, taking third in its six-team heat. The Rams contingent of Alissa Margraf (cox), Lily Herberger, Dana Holland, Emmy Corace, Alicia Kelley, Marisa Landry, Kiana Anderson, Katie Shattuck and Leah McGlynn finished in a time of 6:55.14, edging Cornell (6:55.14) for third place. Penn won the heat in 6:46.80, followed by Northeastern in 6:49.82. Massachusetts and Boston University took fifth and sixth place, respectively.
The regatta was originally slated for two session of racing on Sunday morning. However, poor weather conditions forced race officials at the Doc Hosea Invitational to alter the schedule.
The first session of racing was held Saturday evening in a blustery cross-headwind that was stronger for the earlier races. Because of the gusting wind, it was difficult to compare race times in different heats.
Rhode Island's Varsity 8+ team – which was the same both days – competed well in a tight field. URI's time of 7:17.65 was just 3.16 off the winning time of 7:14.49 by Penn. Syracuse and Northeastern came in just ahead of Rhody, as places two through four were separated by 2.11 seconds. The top four boats were well ahead of Boston University's time of 7:49.32.
Also faring well on the first day was the Third Varsity 8+ team of Avery Cohen (cox), Mekenzie Mattheson, Summer Johnson, Erika Pena, Hannah Boris, Delaney Haggerty, Amber Abderrazzaq, Liz Bushey and Sofia Capua. The Rhode Island contingent was second in its heat, beating both Northeastern and Boston University by more than 26 seconds. Syracuse was well ahead of the field, beating the Rams by 16 seconds.
