How it Happened
Rhode Island (9-13) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Chris Hess scored on a sacrifice fly by Martin Figueroa. In his next at-bat, Figureroa shot the ball back up the middle to plate Ryan Olmo, who had singled through the right side with two away.
Bryant (17-5) pulled ahead with a three-run fifth, and made it a 5-2 after scoring a pair of runs in the top of the seventh.
Rhody cut it to 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth as an infield single by Chase Livingston allowed Hess score and make it a two-run game. However, Bryant got the run back in the top of the ninth, pushing its lead back to three at 6-3.
The Rams would not go quietly though. Derek Gardella led off the inning with a pinch-hit walk before being replaced at first by pinch runner Sam Ilario. Laurence Hill then reached on the first of three fielding errors by Bryant third baseman Jacob Marotta. After a pair of URI strikeouts, Mike Foley and Figueroa both grounded balls to third which Marotta was unable to handle, allowing both Ilario and Hill to cross the plate to make it 6-5. Rhody's comeback bid fell short however as a game-ending strikeout ended things with the tying run on second and the go-ahead run on first.
Inside the Box Score
- Senior Ryan Olmo and redshirt junior Mike Corin both went 2-for-4 on the day. Corin's first hit of the game was the 100th of his career, while Olmo extended his hit streak to seven games - the longest active streak on the team.
- Olmo also scored once, as did Sam Ilario and Laurence Hill - both of whom entered the game as substitutes.
- Redshirt sophomore Chris Hess scored the remaining two runs for the Rams, despite an 0-for-4 day at the plate. He was walked once and reached once on a fielder's choice.
- Junior Martin Figueroa turned in his team-leading fifth multi-RBI game as he drove in Rhody's first two runs of the game.
- Senior Chase Livingston also drove in a run on an infield single in the bottom of the eighth.
- Redshirt junior starter Blaise Whitman went four and two thirds innings, allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts. He exited the game with a 2-0 lead, but had put runners on second and third, who later scored with senior Brad Applin on the mound.
- Applin was charged with the loss, as he allowed the go-ahead run on a two-out, two-run triple in the top of the fifth.
- Jason Blanchard - who was originally slated for the start, before Tuesday's game vs. Quinnipiac was snowed out - did not allow a hit during a scoreless inning of relief in the sixth.
