How it Happened
Tyler Wilson pitched his third complete game of the season, striking out a career-high 13 batters to lead Rhode Island to a 3-1 victory over Massachusetts Friday afternoon.
It was a pitcher's duel, as Wilson (10-1) and UMass starter Ryan Maloney (2-6) were both unscored upon through the first four innings. Both starters faced the minimum numbers of batters over the first three innings. Maloney allowed an infield single in the second, but he induced a double play grounder from the next batter. Wilson retired the first 11 batters before grazing Mike Hart with a pitch with two outs in the top of the fourth.
Rhode Island (23-22, 14-5 A-10) – which moved above .500 for the first time this season – got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Connor Foreman singled to center and moved up to second when the ball got away from the centerfielder. Chase Livingston followed with an infield single to put runners on the corners with one out. A groundout by Mike Corin brought in Foreman with the first run of the game.
Wilson had a string of 14.1 consecutive hitless innings snapped in the top of the eighth. He struck out Hunter Carey, but the pitch got away from Livingston, allowing Carey to reach. Ryan Lever laid down a bunt looking to move Carey to second, but Lever beat the throw to first for the first hit of the game for UMass (14-25, 7-12 A-10). With Cooper Mrowka at the plate, Livingston had Carey picked off second, but shortstop Laurence Hill dropped the throw to allow the runner to move to third. A sacrifice fly from Mrowka drove in Carey to tie the score.
Livingston walked to lead off the bottom of the eighth and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Corin. Derek Gardella walked, and Chris Hess doubled over the rightfielder's head to drive in Livingston with the go-ahead run.
Vinny Scifo led off the top of the seventh with a bunt single to bring the potential tying run to the plate for UMass. Dylan Morris followed with a single through the right side to put runners on the corners. Wilson induced an infield pop up, a strikeout and a groundout to end the game.
Tyler Wilson's Day
- Sophomore Tyler Wilson tied Rhode Island's single-season record for victories, matching the 10 wins by Steve Holmes in 2006. He is now 7-0 against Atlantic 10 competition. He also moved into a tie for 10th place with his 16th career victory.
- With 13 strikeouts, it was the second straight start – and fourth time this season – Wilson has fanned at least 10 batters. The 13 tied the fifth most by a Rhode Island pitcher.
- Wilson now has 98 strikeouts this season, the third-highest single-season total in program history. Only Zack Zuercher (123 in 2004, 103 in 2005) had more in a year.
- Wilson also moved into ninth place in team history with 173 career strikeouts. He passed Dan Pearce (1999-2002) and Chris Pickering (2008-12) Friday. He needs five more to pass Ken Graveline (2007-09) for eighth place.
- The unearned run in the top of the eighth snapped a scoreless streak of 17.1 innings for Wilson, the 10th longest scoreless streak in program history. It is the second time in his career Wilson has thrown 17 or more consecutive scoreless innings. He had a stretch of 22.0 scoreless innings last season.
