How it Happened
Trailing the Minutemen 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Rhode Island cut the UMass lead in half on a two-out, two run double down the left field line by Martin Figueroa. After a heated protest by UMass' Mike Stone - who was arguing the fair ball call - the Minutemen head coach was ejected.

In the bottom of the frame, the Rams found themselves on the receiving end of another controversial call as UMass' John Jennings was called safe on a play at the plate, putting the Minutemen on top 5-2.

A Connor Foreman home run made it a 5-3 game in the bottom of of the eighth, but UMass tacked on another run in the top of the ninth for the eventual 6-3 victory.

Inside the Box Score

  • Senior Connor Foreman's eighth-inning home run was the first of his career. He also singled and reached on a UMass error.
  • Redshirt sophomore Chris Hess and freshman Laurence Hill scored Rhody's other two runs in the loss. Hill drew a two-out walk in the seventh before Hess was hit by a pitch to set up junior Martin Figueroa's two-run double.
  • Senior Steve Moyers was charged with the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits over a five-inning start. He struck out six and walked just one.
  • The start was the 46th of Moyers' career, which sets a new program record for the Rams. Moyers now owns Rhody's career records in both starts (46) and innings pitched (297), and is just 12 strikeouts shy of setting a career record in that category as well.
  • Redshirt junior Blaise Whitman tossed two innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts.
  • Freshman Mark Silvestri and redshirt sophomore Tyler Barss pitched in the eighth and ninth, respectively. Each allowed one hit and one run with one strikeout.
  • Brandon Walsh picked up the win for UMass while Evan Mackintosh earned the four-out save.
  • Massahusetts head coach Mike Stone was ejected in the bottom of seventh inning, followed by UMass left fielder Mike Hart being ejected in the top of the ninth.
  • Prior to the start of the game, Rhode Island held a brief ceremony to honor its seven seniors: Matt Ferraiolo, Connor Foreman, Chase Livingston, Steve Moyers, Ryan Olmo, Brad Applin and Derek Gardella.
