How it Happened
Rhode Island (25-25, 16-6) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Chris Hess led off with a double and Martin Figueroa was hit by a pitch before Jordan Powell doubled down the left field line to drive both runners in. Powell then stole third before scoring on a Ryan Olmo groundout to give the Rams an early three-run lead.

Powell drove Hess in again in the fifth, before scoring himself on an RBI double by Olmo to make it a 5-0 game. An inning later, a pair of triples by Mike Corin and Hess put Rhody on top 6-0.

La Salle (15-26, 6-16) got it's first hit of the game in the bottom of the sixth but a foul out to catcher Chase Livingston ended the inning before the Explorers could do any real damage. La Salle managed just one one more hit the rest of the way - an eighth-inning single off reliever Dom Grillo - as Rhody cruised to the 6-0 victory.

The Tyler Wilson File...

  • Sophomore Tyler Wilson picked up his 11th victory of the year, setting a new single-season record for the Rams. The previous record of 10 - which was set by Steve Holmes in 2006 - stood for 10 years with no pitcher in the last decade coming closer than eight wins.
  • With nine strikeouts on the afternoon, Wilson also upped his season total to 107 to become just the second Ram in program history to fan 100+ hitters in a single season. He joins Zach Zeurcher, who recorded 103 in 2005, after registering a program-record 123 in 2004.
  • For his career, Wilson moved up to seventh all-time with 182 strikeouts over the last two years. Currently sitting sixth on URI's career list is Nick Greenwood, who amassed 203 from 2007-09.
  • Wilson - who entered the game ranked fourth in the nation in hits allowed per nine innings (4.81) - did not allow a hit until the bottom of the sixth, marking his third consecutive start with no hits through at least the first five innings.
  • Wilson wraps up conference play with a ridiculous 0.58 ERA against Atlantic 10 opponents, who managed to hit just .106 off of him over 62.0 innings. His 71 strikeouts against A-10 competition is more that double the total of his hits allowed (22) and walks issued (13) during the course of his eight league appearances.

Inside the Box Score

  • Sophomore Dom Grillo replaced Wilson in the top of the eighth and tossed a scoreless inning and a third before handing the ball to redshirt junior Matt Ferraiolo, who retired the final two batters of the game.
  • Offensively, sophomore Jordan Powell led the way with a single, a double, three RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base.
  • Redshirt sophomore Chris Hess also scored twice and had a pair of hits in the win, including his team-leading seventh triple of the season - which ties URI's single-season record. With 13 triples for his career, Hess passed former Rams Jeff Roy (2011-13) and Mike LeBel (2009-13) on Rhody's all-time list and now ranks second in program history.
  • Redshirt junior Mike Corin also tripled and scored a runs as part of his 2-for-4 day at the plate.
  • As a team, Rhody out-hit La Salle 9-2 and played flawless defense while the Explorers committed three errors.
