How it Happened
Rhode Island (21-22, 12-5) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Chris Hess scored on a Dayton error and Ryan Olmo followed with an RBI groundout that plated Martin Figueroa.
The Flyers (16-31, 5-12) charged back in the fourth however, scoring three runs on five hits to take their first lead of the series.
Rhody evened the score in the bottom of the fifth with Brett McManus singling to center with two away to drive in Figueroa and knot the score at 3-3.
Dayton threatened in the top of the ninth, loading the bases on two walks and an infield single before reliever Nick Johnson got an inning-ending strike out to prevent any damage. With Rhody unable to score in the bottom of the inning, Johnson went back out for the 10th and struck out the side - including a punch out to end the frame with runners on first and second.
Figueroa led off the bottom of the 10th with his fourth hit of the game - a single up the middle - and advanced to second on a successful third-strike sac-bunt by Jordan Powell. Olmo then roped a ball to left centerfield to score Figueroa and give the Rams the walk-off win.
Inside the Box Score
- Junior Martin Figueroa powered the Rhode Island offense, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored - including the game-winner in the bottom of the 10th. He also had four assists and one putout at third base.
- Freshman Brett McManus and senior Chase Livingston each had a pair of hits in the win. Livingston also reached once on a walk while McManus recorded his seventh RBI of the season.
- Senior Ryan Olmo extended his hit streak to six consecutive games in the top of the 10th, when he lined a ball to the wall in left centerfield to drive in the game-winning run. He also had an RBI groundout in his first at-bat.
- Sophomore Nick Johnson picked up his first career victory, tossing the final inning and two thirds and getting four of his five outs by way of strikeout to earn the W.
- Senior Steve Moyers went 8.0 innings in the no-decision start. He gave up three runs (all earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts and one walk. All three runs - and five if his seven hits allowed - came in a single inning.
- Moyers also made his 45th career start which ties URI's all-time record, set by Adam Perkins in 2007. Additionally, he took over the #2 spot in the Rhody record book for career strikeouts, with 237 to date. He is one of just seven players in the history of the program to eclipse 200 career strikeouts and is the first player in a decade to register more than 230.
- Defensively, Moyers recorded a career-high seven assists on the afternoon - more than any other player on the field, and more than Rhody's middle infielders combined. The total also matches the season-high for an individual player as second baseman Chris Hess had seven at Maine (April 26) and shortstop Kevin Heiss had seven at Winthrop (March 6).
