CHERRY HILL, N.J. – Led by a strong effort from its second varsity 8+ boat, Rhode Island finished in a tie for sixth place at the Doc Hosea Invitational on Cooper River Sunday.
The Rams and Minnesota each finished with 49 team points to tie for sixth in the 10-team event that featured several rowing powers. Syracuse (106 points) won the team title, followed by Northeastern (84), Penn (80), Navy (69) and Dartmouth (66).
The event featured a team points system over two rounds of racing. The opening round had two flights of five teams each. The top two teams in each flight plus the two next fastest times advanced to the Grand Final in each flight.
Racing in a slight cross-tail wind that exceeded 8 miles per hour, Rhode Island placed both of its top two boats in the Grand Final of their respective flights. The second varsity 8+ boat was Danielle Wolf, Erika Pena, Emily Winslow, Erin Sweeney, Allie Reilly, Maddie Van Ummersen, Kelsey Williams, Brooke McMahon and cox Karen Petrik had an exceptional day of racing. The boat won its preliminary heat with a time of 6:53.3. That time was the second fastest among the 2V8+ boats (behind only Syracuse) and was faster than four of the V8+ boats.
The 2V8+ carried its momentum into the Grand Final, actually shaving more than two seconds off their morning time. The Rams finished in 6:51.0, claiming second place in the flight. Syracuse won the 2V8+ flight with a time of 6:43.01.
The Rhode Island varsity 8+ boat also qualified for the Grand Final in its flight. The team of Katie Shattuck, Dana Holland, Mekenzie Mattheson, Kiana Anderson, Meghan Ellis, Emily Ali, Kelsey Maymon, Courtney Harrington and cox Lucy Moyes placed sixth overall with a time of 6:54.51 in its final.
Both of Rhode Island's top two boats finished well ahead of the only other Atlantic 10 school in the field. Massachusetts' V8+ boat finished 9th, while the 2V8+ boat was 10th.
Rhode Island competes next at the George Washington Invitational, a two-day event that begins Friday, April 7 at 1 p.m.
