Freshman Ari Castillo hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh and senior Becca Rogers pitched a complete game for her fourth straight win as Rhode Island beat UMBC 5-4 at the Maryland Invitational Thursday.
The Rams (7-9) won their fourth straight game, the first time since 2010 Rhody has won four in a row.
In the top of the third, Rhode Island scored four times. Leah Krivitsky started the rally with a one-out walk and scored on a Sami Villarreal double. Faith Musselwhite followed with her own double to drive in Villarreal. Musselwhite moved to third on a wild pitch. Castillo then walked and stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Erica Robles lofted a foul fly to right field that allowed both runners to tag and move up. Castillo then scored on a wild pitch, capping the rally.
UMBC (6-9) scored three unearned runs in the fourth inning, then tied the game in the sixth with a single run. However, Castillo led off the top of the seventh with a solo home runs, providing the margin of victory.
