How it Happened
Rhode Island knocked off #27 Central Michigan for the second day in a row, fending off a late rally and holding on for the 3-2 win.
The Rams (4-4) got all the offense they needed in the top of the second inning. There, Jordan Laske gave Rhody a 1-0 lead on an RBI double that scored Greg Cavaliere. Thomas Summers and Josh Brodeur each followed with RBI singles to up the Rams' lead to 3-0.
A solid start from Vitaly Jangols kept Rhody in control as CMU was unable to put more than one runner on base in the second, third, fourth, fifth or sixth innings. The Chippewas finally managed to a pair of base-runners in the bottom of the seventh, but Domenic Picone relieved Jangols and got an inning-ending fly-out to end the threat.
The following inning, Central Michigan (6-5) used a single, a hit batter and a walk to load the bases with two away. Rhody then went to closer Tyler Brosius, who needed just one pitch to escape the jam and preserve the 3-0 advantage.
It wasn't as easy in the bottom of the ninth however, as Central Michigan drew a leadoff walk and got back-to-back singles to load the bases. Two more walks then pushed across a pair of runs and made it a 3-2 game, with the bases still loaded and no one out.
Rhody caught a bit of a break on a chopper to third that Alex Santos fielded cleanly and fired home for the first out of the inning. The next batter, Zach Lechnir, grounded into a game-ending 4-6-3 double play, which allowed Rhody to escape with the 3-2 victory.
