Volleyball Wins on the Road at Duquesne

Set One – Rhode Island 25, Duquesne 17
Rhode Island scored six of the first 10 points to lead Duquesne 6-4 early. The Dukes then tied the score at 7-7, and again at 11-11, but a 5-1 Rhody run from there gave the Rams the distance they needed to remain on top. URI took its largest lead of the set (22-15) after back-to-back Duquesne attack errors, and later finished things off on Duquesne's 10th error of the set.

Set Two – Duquesne 25, Rhode Island 17
The second set was back-and-forth early on, featuring tie scores at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, 5-5, 6-6 and 8-8. Duquesne then used eight straight points to double Rhody up at 16-8. Consecutive service aces by Mariah Paulette trimmed the deficit to five (19-14), but the Dukes held on to the lead for the eventual 25-17 victory.
 
Set Three – Rhode Island 25, Duquesne  23
Set number three featured six lead changes and 14 ties. Four straight Rhody kills put the Rams on top 11-8 midway through, but the Dukes responded with a 5-1 push to reclaim the lead at 13-12. The teams traded every couple points up until the score was tied again at 21-21. The next two points went to the Dukes, causing Rhody to call a time out. After the quick regroup, the Rams scored four points in a row to win it 25-23.
 
Set Four – Rhode Island 25, Duquesne 17
The Rams finished strong, recording 16 kills and three aces in the fourth and final set. Rhody also hit at a .324 clip and converted 76 percent of its sideout opportunities (13-17). Meanwhile, the Dukes recorded just 11 kills and had six errors on 28 swings for a .179 attack percentage. Claire Wagner and Brynne Wright each had five kills in the set for Rhode Island, while Mariah Paulette had two aces and a pair of block solos.

Inside the Box Score
  • Sophomore Brynne Wright (20) and junior Claire Wagner (18) combined for 38 of Rhode Island's 57 kills on the afternoon. Wagner also had 11 digs for the double-double.
  • Freshman Grace Hammond finished with 45 assists, eight digs, three block assists, two kills and one service ace.
  • Senior Mariah Paulette had five kills, four aces, three digs and three blocks.
  • Senior Tori Britton led the Rams with six blocks. She also recorded three kills.
  • Grad student Jamie Smith finished with 12 digs, eight kills, three blocks and one service ace.
  • Senior Ella Ratzloff added 11 digs for Rhody.
