How it Happened
After 68 scoreless minutes, Rhode Island had a prime opportunity to take the lead when
Edvin Akselsen was awarded a penalty kick after being tripped inside the box. Akselsen took the PK himself, but launched his attempt over the crossbar as the score remained locked at 0-0.
Â
Isak Oystese nearly broke the deadlock in the 86th minute, as he knocked a shot off the underside of the crossbar, but did not get the bounce in.
Â
Stefan Schmidt kept the Rams in it at the other end of the field, making four second-half saves – including a fully-extended diving stop in the final seconds to send the game to overtime.
Â
Rhody's first chance in overtime came less than a minute in, on an attempt from Oystese that was stopped by UMass' Marvyn Dorchin. The Minutemen ended the first OT with back-to-back corner kicks in the final 15 seconds, but were unable to convert.
Â
URI and UMass each had chances in the second overtime period, but Schmidt and Dorchin held strong for their respective teams as the game ended in a scoreless draw.
