How it Happened
Rhode Island clinched a home game for the opening round of the 2021 Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Championship with a dominating 3-1 win over La Salle Saturday night.
Patrick Agyemang had a goal and an assist to spark the Rams to the victory. With the victory, the Rams can finish with no less than 16 points in the conference standings, meaning they can finish the regular season no lower than third place. The top four seeds host in the opening round.
Â
In the 15th minute,
Isak Oystese played the ball from the edge of the box out to
Jordan Koduah, whose shot deflected to Agyemang for a wide open shot on net. The Rams doubled the lead in the 42nd minute when a failed clearance by La Salle led to quick passes from Agyemang and Hugo Guerro to set up a one-timer from
Kevin Castaneda.
The Explorers managed to make things interesting when Junior Nare fired a 68th minute shot into the upper right 90 from 30 yards out. Any comeback thoughts were thwarted when Rhody's
Edvin Akselsen curled in a free kick from 20 yards out in the 71st minute, allowing URI to coast down the stretch.
